Tormaresca, Nèprica Primitivo, Puglia 2018

The Antinori family started investing in Puglia in 1998 as they believed it was one of the most promising regions in Italy for producing top quality wines with a strong territorial identity. They are members of the exclusive Primum Familiae Vini and were among the first families to create a “super Tuscan” wine in the 1970s – Tignanello. They also launched Solaia and own a host of top estates around the world. FYI – Tormaresca means “tower by the sea”.

The grapes for this NePriCa Primitivo (IGT Puglia) were destemmed, crushed and transferred into stainless steel tanks where alcoholic fermentation took place over a period of 8 – 10 days at a controlled temperature that did not exceed 26C (79F). Malolactic fermentation was completed by the beginning of winter. It was then aged in stainless steel tanks for about 8 months and an additional 4 months in bottle. The wine is an intense ruby red colour with light purplish hues. On the nose, fruity aromas of red fruit, such as sour cherries and wild berry jam blend with soft notes of liquorice and sweet spices. On the palate it has soft, silky tannins, a good structure and is balanced with a lovely fresh acidity. Primitivo is known as Zinfandel in America and Tribidrag, or Crljenak Kaštelanski, in Croatia – where it comes from.
