Stanton & Killeen, Classic Rutherglen Muscat NV

Mother-daughter team, Wendy and Natasha Killeen, use 14 different grape varieties in their famous fortified and still wines. Viticulturist Fred Morris los after the vineyards’ 33 hectares. Varieties include 97-year-old Shiraz vines, Durif, Muscat and Portuguese varieties including Tinto Cão (red dog), Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo), Tinta Barroca and Touriga Nacional. More recently planted to suit Rutherglen’s climate and soils are Alvarinho, Arinto, and Souzão. Winemaker Andrew Drumm continues to develop the decades-old modified solera, which produces some of Rutherglen’s most famous muscats, topaques and tawnys. The colour of this muscat is like dark, caramelised butter with aromas of Turkish delight, tobacco and espresso. The palate is balanced and complex with flavours of rich raisin fruit, rose petal, dried fig and cumquat. The finish is long but not too sweet. The Classic range is the perfect balance of old and new material blended together with an average age of 12 years. It is the second tier of the four classifications, Rutherglen, Classic, Grand and Rare. Perfect as an after-dinner drink with an espresso and dark chocolate. An essential accompaniment to any Christmas celebration.
