Pinot Nero La Tunella 2018

The vineyard, based in the Colli Orientali del Friuli has come a long way since farmer Min Zorzettig started making wine in the 1960s. After a large re-vamp in the early nineties, old vineyards were replanted, new land acquired, new varieties introduced and production was intentionally cut, with harvest taking place almost entirely by hand. Grown on high sun-trap terraces in the eastern Friuli hills, the hand-tended vines produce only the tiniest quantity of grapes. The soils here, a mix of marl and sandstone called Ponca, are unique to the area, and held to be the key to the expressive yet delicate flavours and textural purity of Tunella’s wines.

Today, third generation grandsons Massimo and Marco run the winery in the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region. In 1991, after 30 years of ownership, the Zorzettig family installed a state-of-the-art winery and replaced many of their vines with classic, international varieties. This Pinot Noir has juicy, crushed raspberry flavours, with delicate warm spice and shows off the characteristic ‘Friulian’ weight and elegance.
