Mastroberardino, Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio Rosso, Campania

Mastroberardino is one of the leading wineries and wine families in Italy. It has been a guardian and protector of indigenous grapes of Southern Italy’s Campania region for decades. The family has not just worked to maintain them, but has successfully turned would-be extinct grapes into world class varieties. Antonio’s son Piero is now the 10th generation Mastroberardino to lead the company, overseeing not just the business operations, but also research projects, including classification, planting, and viticultural zoning across the entire region.

This red wine is made from Piedirosso grapes (by law it has to have a minimum of 80% Piedirosso) and has a bouquet full of cherry and plum aromas, supported by herbs and spicy notes of pepper, clove and mineral nuances. On the palate the wine feels warm, juicy and well-structured with smooth fine tannins on the finish. Lacryma Christi means tears of Christ in Italian.
