Donkiesbaai, owned by Jean Englebrecht of Rust en Vrede fame, is situated on the West Coast of South Africa and made from fruit from Piekenierskloof and Witzenberg. The grapes for the Hooiwijn come from the DE Tol farm situated on the top of the Piekenierskloof Pass. Hooiwijn, literally ‘straw wine’ in Afrikaans, are where bunches of grapes are placed on racks covered by straw and twice a week turned by hand. It has aromas of apricot, peach, candied citrus peel and marmalade, which are layered with subtle hints of brioche and roasted nuts. It’s delicately sweet on the palate with generous fruit flavours following through from the nose, with notes of beeswax and dried pears adding texture and a mouth-coating richness.
