Domaine Genoux, La Belle Romaine 2020, Savoie

The domaine, which dates back to the late 19th Century, is now run by André and Daniel Genoux and his son, Pierre. They have 12 hectares of vines around the town of Arbin in Savoie, which they grow biodynamically. No weedkiller or other pesticides are used and biodynamic preparations of plant, mineral or animal type are spread on the soil or on the vine at specific times depending on the cycle of the vine and in relation to a lunar and planetary calendar. The soils are plowed with a caterpillar, winch or animal traction. Vinification takes place at low temperature without SO2.
Harvesting is by hand. There was a 10-day maceration of whole and partially destemmed bunches. Vinification was natural (indigenous yeasts and without the addition of SO2). The juice was kept in stainless steel tanks on its fine lees without bâttonage.
This wine is 100% Monduese (the genetic grandparent of Syrah) – it’s floral, fruity and spicy. The colour is bright and purple, the nose is a complex bouquet of violet, peony and iris. The racy mouth, of a beautiful mineral freshness, is deep with tannins, sometimes sharpened in their youth, fine and silky after ageing for one or two years. Eat with charcuterie or rabbit stew.
